How It Works

The Science of Addiction and How Laser Therapy for Drug & Alcohol Addiction Works

In order to understand how laser therapy successfully treats Drug and Alcohol addiction, you first must understand the physical effects drugs and alcohol have on our bodies. Drugs and Alcohol are addictive because the consumption of these substances creates an immediate pleasure response in the brain by triggering the release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and endorphins.

These neurotransmitters produce a morphine-like effect and are responsible for causing feelings of gratification, pleasure and even euphoria. This creates a brief mood-altering high followed by a crash which leaves the user wanting more. As you continue to ingest the substance, your body starts to require higher amounts in order to achieve the same effect. The repeated cycle of cravings and reward is what leads to addiction.

Unfortunately, substance abuse hijacks our body’s naturally occurring reward system and, over time, the production and release of these pleasure inducing neurotransmitters becomes compromised and they no longer work in the same way they used to. This is what we feel when we experience withdrawal symptoms. Laser Therapy works by treating cravings and withdrawal symptoms on a physical level.

At RPM Laser Therapy we use light energy to stimulate various acupressure points on the body. In doing so, we promote the release of these same neurotransmitters (dopamine and endorphins) without introducing the addictive substance to the body. This offsets physical cravings and withdrawal symptoms, and allows the body to heal and repair itself.

When combined with a desire and readiness to quit, the laser drug and alcohol program can be an extremely effective method of treating the physical aspects of Drug and/or Alcohol addiction. Our Laser Drug & Alcohol Addiction program can be used independently or in combination with other therapeutic modalities.

Overview & Cost

RPM Laser Therapy’s Laser Drug & Alcohol Addiction program costs $600.00 + HST. The program consists of the following components:

  • Initial Consultation: lasting approximately half an hour, the initial consultation provides you with the opportunity to meet your laser therapist and discuss your substance abuse history. Your laser therapist will then work with you to assess your readiness to quit, identify your psychological and environmental triggers and ways to overcome them, and to discuss whether or not the treatment is a viable option for you at this time.

At RPM Laser Therapy we do not proceed with treatment unless both you and your laser therapist agree the Laser Drug & Alcohol Addiction program is an appropriate treatment option for you. We want you to be successful and understand success is more likely to occur when you are ready, willing, able and motivated to quit. The consultation is free of charge and there is no obligation to schedule treatment.

  • Laser Drug & Alcohol Addiction Treatment: each treatment takes approximately one hour to complete and is typically completed at a rate of one session per week. During treatment, various acupressure points on your hands, ears, face, head, legs and feet are stimulated using laser acupuncture techniques. Light energy passes through the skin causing the release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and endorphins. The treatment is completely pain free and non-invasive. In fact, most people report feelings of relaxation both during and immediately following treatment.

How to Prepare for Treatment

We ask that you do not attend your appointment under the influence of any substance (including prescription medication) you are seeking help from. It is required that minimal amounts of the substance are in your system during your session to ensure the substance does not hinder the effectiveness of the laser treatment. High levels of the substance in the body will compete with the treatment session thereby limiting the desired physiological effects required for you to receive the full benefits from the therapy.

Since our Laser Drug & Alcohol Addiction program uses laser acupuncture on various parts of the body, loose clothing is recommended.
